The Red Devils Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
