The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
