The English Team to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
The England national team will commence their Euro 2028 campaign at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they attain the relatively straightforward qualification for a competition staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an English men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is almost certain to stage the England side for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.
England are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their knockout stage opener would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Launch and Demonstration
The championship was launched at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were confronted as they entered the location by approximately 50 activists, who urged the Israeli team to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were displayed with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Timeline
The first match of Euro 2028 will be played at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a game that will involve Wales if they qualify.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be used for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will appeal to families and help reach a wider spectrum of viewers.
Host Nations
The Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the qualification process; two reserved places will be reserved for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the standard process.
Stadiums and Knockout Stage
Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium complete the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals played at every host’s main arena.
The qualifying draw will be held in Belfast, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on a date in late 2026.
