Taliban Employed Left-Behind British Equipment to Locate Afghans Who Worked Alongside Western Forces, Investigation Hears
A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities abandoned sensitive technology enabling Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals that had served with international military.
Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger
The whistleblower, identified as Person A, stated that people concerned by the information breach were instructed to move homes and switch their phone numbers to protect themselves from the ruling authorities.
MPs are investigating official management of a serious breach of private information concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to move to the UK to escape militant rule.
How the Leak Occurred
A data file containing their personal data, comprising identities, phone numbers and in some cases relative details, was accidentally leaked by an official working at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.
The breach came to light only in August 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had applied to relocate to Britain were posted on Facebook.
Taliban Capabilities
It appears there is a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers are without comparable resources that we have,” Person A informed lawmakers.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have your phone number, they can trace your exact position. That's precisely what specialized teams achieved.”
Under inquiry about whether the Taliban had access to advanced decryption, Person A stated: “They've got everything.”
Consequences of the Information Leak
Early investigations presented to the inquiry estimated that approximately fifty kin and colleagues of Afghans affected by the breach had been murdered.
A gag order regarding the incident was implemented in late 2023 and blocked any information regarding the matter from public disclosure until mid-2025.
Safety Measures
Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the aid group she was working with told affected households they were working with that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been breached”.
“We recommended that they moved if they could and switched their mobile numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if the Taliban obtained this information, would result in identification and capture,” the source testified.
Contested Findings
The source contested that government assessment carried out by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to determine that the possession of the information by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.
“The important fact is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”
She detailed disturbing treatment suffered by at-risk Afghans, including electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“There are cases of young kids who have had limbs fractured to try to get households to reveal locations,” she testified.
