A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 40-year-old presenter was approached by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before escaping on foot.
