Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.
The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
