Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton made remarks after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 victory over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M extension.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the player and his coach.
