American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to climate and additional factors.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated flights would be delayed due to a lack of employees - among the peak since the closure started.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest halt in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.

On that day, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.
