The Black Phone
The director's locked-room horror stands strong even without a continuation. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has rendered the children on edge. However, the disconnected phone on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher and her felon spouse. The actor acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and bad faith, yet Chastain succeeds to depict the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, on Film4
