California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, every region of California is experiencing drought conditions. This landmark event arrives after challenging years marked by below-average rain that worsened blaze threats and challenged its huge agribusiness.

A Map Reveals No Drought

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This shift came after weeks of heavy precipitation that helped fill key lakes like the state's largest lakes exceeding their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The journey here involved intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, leading to significant overflow, power outages, and fatalities. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Even into late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were considered abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 washed away those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

However, authorities caution that the end of drought status does not mean having no water worries. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow show it at only about 70% of the typical level.

This mountain snow, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for future water availability. Water officials point out that it is premature to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to sustaining this positive water situation for the coming seasons.
