Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
