A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
