A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
